Blackjack at a Glance

At the start of the eighteenth century, a popular game was born in French casinos. The game was called vingt et un (literally twenty one in French) and the name said it all. This was a card game that's main goal was to reach 21, as the name states, or as close to 21 as possible without going over. Its popularity grew because of the simplicity of the game.

Although there have been different variations to the game, depending on the region its being played in, the main idea has never been lost and that's why its popularity hasn't either. It helps to know that the game you love is constant and universal. This was the game known as twenty-one which was later taken to the United States where casinos created the name blackjack to entice players to want to play at the gaming tables.

Blackjack referred to an automatic twenty-one from an initial hand where there was an Ace of Spades and a black Jack, either of spades or of clubs. Casinos offered big bonuses, sometimes even payouts of 10:1, to entice players to play at their blackjack tables. Blackjack bonuses have since disappeared but the name was catchy and stuck with the crowd. For some people, now any kind of Ace and face card combination is referred to as blackjack even though the jack may or may not be one of the cards.

Certain things have changed while others remain the same but the fact remains that blackjack is a very popular game that still attracts the crowd.
